Nilesh's Weblog

India Blog Home

December 20, 2002 10:05 AM

Presenting, hum*blog! Phew! Atlast, here's a rough layout for the Indian blog home that we are planning to put up. I got stuck in some work yesterday. Anyway, read more for the explanation of the bloghome. And please put in your suggestions / criticisms / raves / rants on it »»

Click here to see the page.

Points:

  1. The idea is to have a webhome for Indian bloggers with write-ups on Indian bloggers, blogger meets and putting the spotlight on deserving blogs.
  2. There should be a blog where everyone can post and discuss various things. It should be moderated.
  3. As a plus point, the site will also provide XMLRPC ping services, a most popular links service (like Blogdex), a Recently Updated listing of Indian blogs like (blo.gs) and a Find your blog neighbour feature (like nycbloggers).
  4. Do not go on the design. It looks somewhat dry. A photo or a collage will liven up the site. What we need is a photo collage representing India. I tried to create one but couldn't do because of lack of good photos of people. Vikas, can you help out? You are the most experienced photographer among us. Can you make up a nice collage for the front page?
  5. I'll give some explanation for the page -
    1. Spotlight: Will focus on current hot ongoing blogging events, on Blogger meets and some well-deserving blogs.
    2. Fresh Curry: Will show the last five newly added blogs.
    3. Blox Populi: You can suggest a better name if you have something in mind. This is a blogdex clone with a difference. It will have some subjective points also. We'll have a bunch of bloggers who will look at the most popular blogs and push them up or down manually according to their `real' value. This should have some human touch to it.
    4. About: You know what. This will also have credits to the original guys who brought us all together.
    5. FAQs: regarding blogging in general.
    6. The hum*blog: This will be a moderated blog on the site itself. It will have news and interesting tidbits posted by members.
    7. Blogs from A to Z: The bloggers' list in alphabetical order.
    8. Blog Density/Blogmap: This will have a map of India. The locations of bloggers will be marked on the map. In future, we may extend it to the states and metros also. Relatively easy to make than what it looks like, although not too easy.
    9. Add your blog/search: needs no explanation
    10. Most Recently updated: copy and paste the blo.gs system here. :-)
    11. Notify Me: keep all bloggers (and other people too) posted about new things on Indian bloggers.
    12. An RSS aggregator should also be there
    13. We should put up a Forum for helping new bloggers, say using phpBB
    14. Anita's indianbloggers ring suffices for the weblog ring
  6. Ok, now for some suggestions from your side.
  7. We need a good name for the site. Anand had thought of humblog and I found it cool enough. Still anyone can suggest a new one. Then we need to register a domain for the site.
  8. Next, we need webspace for the site. Where do we host it? We'll need about 50MB space to start with. The ability to run Perl/PHP scripts, about 2GB in bandwidth per month.
  9. We need to allocate work amongst ourselves to complete the site fast. But, that will come as soon as we all approve the site contents.
  10. First, your views on this design/site layout/content/etc...
  11. Go, shoot!

the design of hum*blog looks uber-kool! very clean, uncomplicated and effective, if i may say so. though, as u say, a collage on the essence of India would add some spice!
the features u've explained are all-encompassing. :)

i'm ready to help out in any which way i can.

I am impressed :-)

A little more color would be good though .. The user has to get a feel that he has come to india :-)

so when do we book the domain + hosting ? first everyone has to agree upon the name, right ? we need to look for the best host for our domain .. we might need cron tab support if we are going to crawl .. unfortunately most shared vendors dont support user cron tabs :(

are we going to use the blo.gs code for the ping or the kamat server ? the blo.gs may be hard to install as it has hard coded blo.gs pathnames all over the place ...

we can ask ram for his excellent indian blogger list script ..

in addition to the fresh posts from member blogs, we can categories like technology, films etc These can show a collection of posts from the member blogs .. This will make it a portal kind of site for all things indian :-)

what tool are we going to use for the site blog ? MT ? or should we go for one of those community log tools like geeklog or postnuke ??

all in all excellent work and a nice start. lets hope others join in !

Neat-o!

thoughts in my head right now:

the font is nice

More saffron, white, blue and green please.

And oh, how 'bout the chakra, magnified, with only 3/4th of it showing, in a very light, almost transparent blue as a fixed background for all the pages?

the content is perfect - everything that I thought of is there (Nilesh, we have this common frequency thing I think)

The name HumBlog is nice, but it contains "humbl", which suggests "humble" in English. (I'm not worried about firangs - but most of us also use English as a primary thinking language, that's why)

Using our flag as a design element - has any one seen what the backdrop at BJP headquarters looks like on TV? It's a stylized BJP logo from a distance, but when you go close, its actually a photoshopped collage of millions of people. I'm not saying BJP is cool, but whoever made that backdrop did a good job.

the asterisk in hum*blog reminds me of blog*spot

i want india.weblogs.com as the domain (they say if you want if hard enough, you get it)

Nilesh, super cool stuff. The layout has come out very nice.

I volunteer to pay for the domain name for the first year.

For webspace, a few of us can pitch in together to meet the costs.

What other help do you need ? Let me know.

Cheers.

well, now that user opinions have begun to pour in ....here is my bit,

well, now that user opinions have begun to pour in ....here is my bit,

1. instead of a collage of people it would be better if we have some high quality pics of indian life, arts & yes people too etc on the band. Maybe a script could keep the images cirulating! I cwould gladly/proudly submit a few of my Hampi pics, better still Nilesh what do you think about a trip to Hampi, You, Me n Rama? yea the sun will be merciless but the the pics will be better and clearer!

2. I would most preferably think about an external engine than having to code everything up , also it makes better sense as projects like phpnuke would in itself be updated over the years. So continuity is assured!

Plus such advanced formats need the moderation facility as the quality at any point of time should not be sacrificed for the sake of quantity!

3. Since i have had a preview of the picture before anyone else i have had time to ponder, and hence would say the colours could be a brighter and deeper, which naturally enriches the experience! If we are having a collage then we just need to concentrate on the backgrounds giving each area a distinct feel or perhaps just have brighter headings.

4. I would strongly recommend using an earlier developed & ongoing development engine and editing it to suit our own needs than to reinvent the wheel!^^

5. & better to get this off the floor as soon as we can than to let the interest fade away!

6.Since this is nilesh's weblog its only easier & right that he corodinate proceedings! Why not make a new weblog where people just can discuss the progress of this Maha Blog/portal! I really think it would be better that we actually define what we have set out to create,
a: specifically an Indian blog portal? or

b: a community weblog?

c: just an indian portal?

7.I do not think india.weblogs.com as wouldn't we lose out our identity to a commercial interest? Better to have our own domain name.

8.I would prefer not have the name india on the "name" as it sort of limits the viewership, people immediately assume that an indian portal wouldn't relate to them. Ofcourse its Indian but an International flavour would add pizzaz!!

Suggestions for Nilesh:
a. Maybe you could glean, i could help you with it, all the points stated in the past 4 days in comments or by posts & list them one by one and let others rate them! That way we will have some streamlining rather than random nodes. Just for this i suggested the new weblog!

Hosting?? ... why are we thinking..hostmagik all the way!!!

Very pale, man. Is it suffering from anaemia? ;)

Bring some blood and contrast into the page, my friend. Headings need to stand out (Try #CC0000 or ), text needs to be readable (try #333333).

(Personal opinion: sky blue, a pale, receding colour, should be banned from being used for hyperlinks (try #CC3300.)

My quick 30 second appraisal.

PS: Why does this insist on an email address when it's not marked as required on the comments form?

What Sameer says is right. There needs to be a collage to balance the light colours.
Anand:
A little more color would be good though .. The user has to get a feel that he has come to india :-)
The collage would provide the correct balance. I don't know if Vikas has read this, he would be the ideal person to create an proper collage depicting people of India. That would really bring out the Indianness of the portal.

Arnab:
More saffron, white, blue and green please.
As said above, the balancing is done by the collage. Wait for version 2.... :-)
the content is perfect - everything that I thought of is there
That's great!

Thanks, Kribs.

I made quick collage. most of the snaps have been taken by me. not the ones of the southern india.
I had mostly northern india (especially delhi related) snaps.

you might notice i moved jama masjid to the east, and qutub minar down south

though i tried my best to keep the snaps according to the places/areas.

we can have the collage in shape of India. Northern India will have a pinch or saffron, while southern w/ green, and white at the centre. wot say?

That's what all Indian sights do. Focus on the arts. Blogging is about people. So there should be people more than arts on the collage.

what do you think about a trip to Hampi
Sachin, we have been planning this since the last 4 months. ;-)

I would most preferably think about an external engine than having to code everything up
Yes, for the start, an external engine. As we move on, we'll use our own code.

Since this is nilesh's weblog its only easier & right that he corodinate proceedings!
This doesn't go by default. Since, no one is coming forward, I am voluteering to do the co-ordination. And yeah, its more a blog portal than a community weblog. The focus is clear. The weblog is an added feature.

I do not think india.weblogs.com as wouldn't we lose out our identity to a commercial interest? Better to have our own domain name.
I agree whole heartedly.

Just for this i suggested the new weblog!
It would be good if we did that. But I think we should move forward fast.

The text is #555. Not so far off from #333. If you see, there is noticable clutter on my site(nilesh.org) for a dark text colour. And the contrast is low for the headings deliberately. Can you give a matching <a href colour for #CC0000?

PS: Why does this insist on an email address when it's not marked as required on the comments form?
It should be present there. It is there in the pop-up box. Will correct that.

ok as for the collage, a nice dynamic rotating images wud bring in freshness each time. the collage sud compliment the site design rather than be the focus on the on the #TOP.
A clear clean geometric images wud go by the curent given design.
The [mix] image content cud be well from the people to life to fixtures, to enthnic designs frmo across the country. The db well can be populate over a period of time and wuld also be a showcase of INDIA. This cud be intresting!

Are we heading towards a IndiaPOrtal with variuos feature like blogsphere.. Or is it the other way round??
We need to have a vclear cut defination and accordingly collect content

iDea#1- On the lines of the gawker.com can we have city news blog.. ON a smaller scale just the news headlines with links to the relevant news media sites.

iDea#2- Have owner mugshots with each and every blog list/details

Worry#1- Who is gonna maintain it all..... or we choose the collabrative path. Every owner does his share of managing and posting stuff. Have diff dept assigned to designated authors

more as it comes..............

About the design, I feel, it will evolve more. This was the first step.

Looking by everyone's comments, it seems no one has different views over any other new features than shown on the sample page. So we can probably freeze on them. They are namely,

  • Featured weblogs and events

  • Newly added blogs

  • Blogdex clone(link ratings)

  • blo.gs clone(recently updated)

  • A community blog(The hum*blog), which I feel should be limited to blogging about indian bloggers, not day-to-day stuff like our individual blogs. I think the regular stuff should be left to our own blogs...

  • A blogmap of India

  • Subscription for newsletter and alerts

  • A forum for bloggers on various topics, ranging from coding to design to helping new bloggers or simply to discuss anything.

Anyone, anything more?

Amit, a dynamic collage would be the coolest. But I think we should first concentrate on getting up the site. For now lets do a good start. :-) And yes, a geometric collage would be fitting. Meaning, various photos separated clearly from each other with bold lines and arranged.

Reading through the comments, I get a feeling that the image/collage is hogging more lime-light than the actual substance of the proposed site.

This is so very cool. Few questions though. Why are you not using the full page and restricting it to just 700 px. The green color for the navigation links need to be more brighter. Also consider increasing the line-height for the content. Looks bit cluttered in the middle right now.

Great show.

I like the idea of an indian blog a lot...my nonprofit's been thinking about creating a similar resource for the city of Varanasi, but I'm too new to blogging to be able to offer much input to the idea at present.

To respond to someone else's comment on not including "india" or "indian" in the domain name, since it might exclude people: having "India" in the domain name will increase your search engine rankings for "India" dramatically. I think the extra traffic this would bring would be worth losing a few people not interested in india, right?

What I'd personally love to see on a blog would be a section for motorcycle trips...I have a few friends with Enfields and that seems like the perfect theme for a travel blog, or maybe a travel section on a larger blog resource.

Anyway, hope some of this helps, and I'll be checking back to see what you guys have done with this.

-Dave.

Hi, Dave (Dave referred me to this site). I also think setting up a blog on India, and for Indians, might be a wonderful idea. Does this blog target a certain age group, or...?

Perhaps adding a child-friendly blog for school children might be a good idea, in terms of introducing and promoting technology in education...that might be a project our organisation would also be interested in.

I like the colors on the sample pages linked, but I think the Indian nationalistic colours are a little too subtle there...maybe this should all be under a very striking, vibrant title graphic?

Yeah I saw what you meant about the "do not go on the design", the layout and look n feel needs vast improvement. But cool enough for starters. I'm all for a "Feel-India" collage for the title bar. Also, have you thought of providing any space for advertisements? I don't intent to say commercialize the whole thing, but hawkers are likely to see an opportunity there ...

How'bout a blogger forum? Where else to host this if not here. Also, wont be a bad idea to a "blog-search" by topics. You could also provide links to blogs which are of a particular hue like, "photography, books, movies etc"...(this will have to be done the time a blogger comes in, like say your name and age before we let you in)

Keep us posted. This is really shaping up good.
