Non-innovative copycats

The mission statement of a new generation post graduate school in Bangalore -
To build on the track record set by India in general and Bangalore in particular, to enable India to play a key role in the global IT scenario through a world-class Institute with a focus on Education & Research, Entreprenuership and Innovation.
Mark the last word of the statement - Innovation. Now go to their site and see their innovative site design. :\ Don't they have a single student who can create a simple & functional design something like say IITB ?
Update(04-May-2004): The IIITB design has since long been updated and they now sport a crisp fresh `academic look'!

I'm not a fan of IITB's page, but it is, as you rightly say, functional. IIIT's page is downright hilarious. I went to the site, and closed it without reading anything. If the design is like that, maybe the text is from some other univ's website as well.
However, these kinds of mishaps often happen because of small stupid things. For example, my college's website looks like the way it does for the last 2 years because some junkrock-crazy senior has admin rights to the site and will not let go of it. Hence, the rest of us bury our heads in despair, without our @kmv.edu addresses, etc.
Websites should be taken very seriously - they're the most accessible representation of an institution - something principals and deans should take note of.

The IIITB website it seems is updated daily and still those guys there haven't realised it. They are one of the masses who like the Hotmail interface no matter how heavy it is or how difficult it is. I have submitted the site to pirated-sites.com. Hopefully they will ut it up for everyone to see. That should probably initiate a change at IIITB.

The IIIT-B website has no similarity what so ever with the hotmail site except for a tab control which is being used by many sites. This comment has been posted with an ulterior motive rather than fair criticism.

mr. . i guess u have really been driven by a motive of striking back for something that u probably didnt or have not got.... this is not the way life is... u have to learn from ur mistakes, and to keep improving is the key to life.. which luckily we know but u dont... so learn from life's mistake and stop mocking others... there is always a polite way to point out things.. learn to be humane

Guys, IMO, the website is a rip off from hotmail except for probably the javascripts. But if you feel otherwise, why defend yourself with all kinds of reasons? If you cannot think of a design when designing a website, you can as well put up a plain jane page.
Don't talk about being humane. Take criticism positively. BTW, I don't mind you trying to reason my post. You are free to do that. I am free to put my opinion across.

Nilesh,
I apologise on behalf of my friends, but I assure you that you have been too hasty in judging the institute by the site - the book by its cover.
I agree with you that the site is the institute's window to the world and we should have done a better job, and I thank you for bringing it to everyone's notice.
Your site is one of the very best I have seen from across the world and it would be expected that you should dislike the design of our site. As far as that aspect is concerned, you are right.
As far as the institute, its administration, the faculty, its structure and its actual operation-on-the-ground are concerned though, you will have to see it to believe it. If you can make it sometime, I welcome you to come over.
We will honestly try to bring the level of the site up to match the institute's other levels of operation.
Thanks and Regards,
Raul Siddhartha

Raul, it's not that I am being arrogant and having some design sense that I am lashing out at IIITB. The fact that the guys who designed the site chose to copy an obviously popular design, causes the problem. Since Hotmail is perhaps one of the most popular mail sites, the damage done is more than if they had been content with something else. And that is the reason for my post. There are a lot of pirates out there on the Internet. I chose IIITB particularly because one, it is supposed to be a premier institution boasting of some of the best talents in the country and second, no one has cared to change it for the past one and a half years. That's about when I saw it first.

I believe you for that. (...Psst... I am generally in Bangalore).

Hmmm! It is interesting to know how people think you have a motive behind any criticism. When I wrote this post, I meant to show the disparity in the institution's goals and the website design (which is supposed to be the institution's face on the Internet and which is visited by students and professors around the world). That has changed now with the fresh crisp design.
Now for some more criticism - the homepage does not validate as valid HTML/XHTML.

What in your "free opinion" does a valid HTML/XHTML mean??
I think I will restrain from commenting until I understand your perspective of the phrase.

Looks like you haven't followed the link I gave in the earlier comment. What that phrase means is that, like thousands of websites on the Internet, the IIITB homepage does not have a DOC type defined. Additionally, assuming that the webpage is designed as an HTML 4.01 spec page, it doesn't validate as an "HTML 4.01 Transitional" page. This means that the page doesn't adhere even loosely to the HTML 4.01 specification, a basic requirement for today's web standards. Additionally I see that the page is made in MS Frontpage which means it was designed with IE users in mind. Which also means that users who use other browsers may or may not see the site as you meant it to be. Heck, many pages on even my site are not valid XHTML pages. But an attempt is made to move towards that goal. For example, if you want to see whether this very page is valid XHTML, click here.
