The Fertile Suburb

Bandra, the most fashionable suburb of Mumbai, had an interestingly simple history. In the 1600s, it was a large village, 20 miles in length, with lots of rice, vegetable & coconut plantations. It was said to yield very good cabbages, radishes, water melons and onions. The island of Salsette (Bandra was in Salsette) was referred to as a granary. Rice was the chief crop here. One of the early gazettes mentions that when there was a friction between the British in Bombay and Portuguese in Salsette, the export of rice from Bandra was banned. The rice exports in those times would go as far as Goa. Also there were mango groves on the hills of Bandra. Those once mango groves are one of the most famous addresses in India now. On a different note, the queen of the suburbs is going to get a new necklace quite soon.

I object to Bandra eing called a fashionable suburb ... i see lots more of fashion consiuos ppl in other parts of mumbai thanbandra. Ofcourse u might always refer to it whenever Glamour is mentioned .. but then thats a completely different issue ...

I have nothing to comment about bandra, except that I grew up in bandra and did my early schooling there. I still miss that place.
But right now, this comment is to just say a big 'hi' to you from Abhishek and myself. Both of us are in the Uk at the moment and were just doing some tp at Abhishek's place in Leeds.

Bandra now is yuck???? Boy, you surely have no idea what Bandra is all about? I certainly feel Bandra is the most fashionable suburb. You try checking any stats and they all would say its the best suburb. Lately, its even called the "Restaurant suburb of Mumbai".
